Variations of a product: stars

Hans Hollein created an exhibit displaying the basic designs used to symbolize stars. The exhibit was part of the "MAN TRANSFORMS" exhibition for the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum's opening at the Carnegie Mansion, October 1976.

Le stelle di cui parliamo non sono intese nel loro significato astronomico o astrologico, ma principalmente come simbolo ed archetipo formale.

La stella è un motivo decorativo molto comune ed appartiene a tradizioni artistiche e culturali assai differenti tra loro. La stella è un simbolo universalmente riconosciuto che appartiene all’immaginario collettivo di ogni popolo e che da sempre ha spinto l’uomo a rivolgere il proprio sguardo verso il cielo. Il potere che emana da questo simbolo mantiene il suo fascino sempre in vita, comè è dimostrato dal lavoro di molti artisti contemporanei.

La stella è quindi un simbolo delle relazioni tra culture differenti e dei legami tra il tempo presente e la storia.

Aldilà della fascinazione formale per la stella, l’obiettivo principale di questo progetto, e in generale del nostro lavoro, è di realizzare architetture che dialogano con il loro contesto fisico e con il l’ambiente sociale e culturale in cui sono realizzate, costruendo uno spazio di relazioni dedicato non solo all’esposizione, ma anche agli incontri tra le persone.

Per questo motivo la sede dello STAR MUSEUM non è concepita come una struttura architettonica autosufficiente ed autonoma, collocata in un luogo specifico, ma piuttosto come una costellazione di elementi che dialogano ed entrano a far parte del contesto in cui sono inseriti.

Ogni sede dello STAR-MUSEUM raccoglierà un archivio di immagini ed oggetti, consentirà la realizzazione di esposizioni di questi materiali ed ospiterà diversi tipi di eventi legati alle stelle, che saranno decisi di volta in volta coinvolgendo la comunità e le istituzioni culturali locali.

STAR-MUSEUM è un museo itinerante, ospiterà la propria collezione in strutture, temporanee o permanenti, in località e contesti differenti.

STAR-MUSEUM è un museo dinamico, ad ogni nuova collocazione geografica corrisponderà una crescita della sua collezione ed una variazione della configurazione dei suoi spazi espositivi.

STAR-MUSEUM è costituito da un’architettura temporanea (o semi-permanente), di volta in volta differente a seconda dei materiali, tecnologie, forme, linguaggi, caratteristiche di ogni collocazione.

STAR-MUSEUM è una struttura temporanea, ma è nella sua natura lasciare una traccia del proprio passaggio, permanente, ma rispettosa dell’ambiente. Piantare degli alberi, per esempio, oppure lasciare in eredità parte delle proprie strutture, se queste possono essere ancora utili dopo la fine dell’evento, oppure ancora il suo passaggio può essere l’occasione per rendere utilizzabili degli spazi per usi futuri differenti.

STAR-MUSEUM è anche un luogo per la contemplazione della natura e delle caratteristiche specifiche di ogni paesaggio in cui è collocato.

STAR-MUSEUM espone materiali ed oggetti di varia natura, la raccolta dei quali, di volta in volta, è realizzata in collaborazione con le comunità ed istituzioni culturali locali (musei, università, centri di ricerca, singoli studiosi, curatori, artisti, ecc.), ma è anche concepito come un luogo per ospitare eventi performativi, incontri, conferenze o anche semplicemente come un archivio aperto al pubblico. E’ nostra intenzione incoraggiare i visitatori a lasciare i loro contributi alla ricerca ed alla collezione.

STAR-MUSEUM nasce dalla consapevolezza di un’ossessione per questa forma geometrica a cinque, sei, sette, otto... punte.

The stars in this museum are not intended strictly in their astronomic or astrologic meaning, but mainly as a symbol and formal archetype.

The star as a decorative pattern is very common to different cultural and artistic traditions and it’s particularly tied to islamic artistic tradition. The star is an universally recognized symbol, that belongs to the collective imagery of every people and that all along prompted men to stare up to the sky. The power that emanate from this symbol keeps its appeal still alive, as it is visible in the work of many contemporay artists.

The star is than a symbol of the relationships between different cultures and of the links between present times and history.

Beyond the formal fascination for the star, the main objective of this project, and in general of our work, is to realise architectures that dialogue with their physical context and with the cultural and social environment in which they are placed, building a relational space not only dedicated to the display, but also for the people to meet.

For this reason, the STAR MUSEUM's venue is not conceived as a self-sufficient architectonic structure, put in a specific place, but as a costellation of elements being part and dialoguing with their context.

Every STAR MUSEUM's venue will host images, objects, archives, and different kind of events related to the stars, to be decided with the contributions of local communities and cultural institutions.

STAR MUSEUM is a travelling museum, it will host its collection in temporary or permanent structures, in different places and contexts.

STAR MUSEUM is a dynamic museum: at every geographic displacement will correspond an increase of its collection and a variation of its exhibition space’s configuration.

STAR MUSEUM is constituted by a temporary (or semi-permanent) architecture, different from time to time according to the materials, technologies, forms, languages, characteristic of each location.

STAR MUSEUM is a temporary structure, but it’s in its nature to leave a permanent, but respectful for its environment, mark. Planting trees, for example, or leaving back part of its structures if they could be still useful after the end of the event.

STAR MUSEUM is also a place for the contemplation of the nature and of the specific features of each landscape in which it is placed.

STAR MUSEUM displays materials and objects of various nature, the collection of which from time to time, is done in collaboration with the local cultural communities and institutions (museums, universities, research centres, etc.), but it is or can be also conceived as a place to host performative events, meetings, lectures, or only as an archive open to the public. It is our intention to encourage visitors to leave contributions to the research and the collection.

STAR MUSEUM’s concept is born from the conscious awareness of an obsession for this geometric shape with five, six, seven, eight... points.
